Have you ever noticed how the world feels a little brighter after thirty minutes of fast walking, or dancing around your kitchen? That's not a coincidence. Movement is one of the most powerful, and most accessible, tools we have for mental balance.
What movement actually does to your brain
For a long time, scientists believed the adult brain's structure was fixed. Then came the discovery of neuroplasticity — the brain's ability to form new connections throughout life — largely driven by a protein called BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor).
Regular moderate aerobic movement — walking, running, swimming, cycling — measurably raises BDNF levels. In other words: moving literally helps your brain rebuild itself, and become more resilient to stress and low mood.
Balance, not personal records
Extreme diets and punishing, hours-long training sessions are a form of stress on the body.
Moving with awareness
True fitness for both body and mind is movement done with awareness: feeling each muscle, breathing with intention, and choosing the kind of movement that supports your nervous system instead of depleting it.
A key player here is the vagus nerve — the communication line between your brain and body, running from your brainstem down to your gut. It regulates heart rate, digestion, mood, and your ability to calm down.
Movement paired with deep breathing activates this nerve, switching on your parasympathetic nervous system — your body's "rest and repair" mode. You come out of fight-or-flight, and your mind settles.
But a workout that's too intense, done while holding your breath or without rest, can do the opposite: stress hormones spike, and you end up depleted instead of restored. That's why the movement you choose matters as much emotionally as it does physically.
Mid-workout, three questions worth asking yourself:
▫️ Where am I holding tension right now?
▫️ How am I breathing?
▫️ What do I actually need — energy, or release?
For some, that's boxing. For others, it's yoga.
The only way to know is to try, and to actually listen to what your body says back 💚
